My blog is basically about my travels through sewing land making quilts and tote bags and purses. I am learning as I go and willing to help others. I love to sew and love fabric. I am a retired school teacher. I have a store on ebay http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Fabric-for-quilts-and-more and I am the owner of a yahoo group called sewingtotebagsandpurses

inside of the Izzy and Ivy Penelope Ruffle Bag
On the inside I used a free spirit pink that has some reds in it and it worked out fabulously.
I made magnetic snap tabs instead of attaching them in the lining and added an inside zipper pocket and a slip in double pocket.
It also has loops with 4 silver rings. I did follow the pattern except that I turned the bag instead of adding bias tape on the top and used the magnetic tabs.
Seems like I just can't follow a pattern completely....

Izzy & Ivy Penelope Ruffle tote
I am fascinated with this pattern by Izzy and Ivy and this is the second one I have made. I made a black and white one and gave it to Connie. She was thrilled with it.
Then I decided I wanted one for myself. When the new Moda for valentine's Day arrived, I said yeahhhhhh. This is it.

christmas purse
Good over all shot of the purse with the inside peeking out and a tab and the webbing handle.
christmas purse close up
Close up shot showing the quilting and the stitching on the band made from Moda bias binding.
christmas quilted purse
I just finished a purse to carry myself during the holiday season for Christmas.
My Bosal interfacing friend Drew sent me some thin foam to use instead of interfacing. I assume the best way to use it is to quilt the inside and outside fabric together.
It turned out great, and I was thrilled with the results. I used a french seam to finished where joining sides and bottom and installed magnetic snaps on tabs I made and sewed the tab only to the top band on the inside. I have been wanting to try that for ages.
The bag has shape and no bulk and went together quickly.

somehow they all turned out alittle different
I made baby bibs today!!!!!!!Such fun. I got the pattern free from chickpea online. I have a great niece and a great friend's daughter I am making these for. I started out with the baby bag-Marlee Bag I designed for my niece. Now I have moved onto bibs.
I also made the crayon caddies for the ones alittle older in the family.
Now I am waiting for the Happy Stacker pattern by Heather Bailey.
Not enough time in the day to sew. My dear mother, God rest her soul, loved to sew too and it is a shame she didn't live long enough to see me sew. Maybe she sees it anyway.

birdie sling
Today i finished the second birdie sling I made for dee dee. I love the way it turned out. The fabric is free spirit and lovely. I love Amy Butler's patterns, because she goes into a lot of detail, and I am a detail person. Thanks to her Stash and Dash pattern I learned to put in zippers. I attended her school house session in 2008 at the International Quilt Market and she was delightful and so down to earth. Very natural person.

I made this for DeeDee's mother or daughter I don't know which. I made DeeDee one and she loved it so much, and when she took it home her family wanted one too. So, sheasked me to make her a green one and I did. I love this Marcus fabric called Al Fresco. This is my favorite bag pattern and I always make myself one every season or so.

crayon caddy
I made another crayon caddy and this time like a little portfolio with a holder for papers and coloring books etc and more crayons. I used the Moda Birdie fabric charm squares quilted. I also used the Bosal Craf-Tex to reinforce it and it opens up like a suit case and has velcro to close it.

crayon caddy
While in texas i bought Japanese fabric called Happy go Lucky and used some of it today to make crayon caddies. I got the pattern from the internet from http://www.skiptomylou.org/2008/09/keep-on-rollin/
It is such a nice pattern with lovely directions and pictures. I just made mine to tie because I didn't have the cord stop she called for. I will get some and try again. I love the pattern/tutorial and her blog.

International Quilt Market in Houston 2009
I just returned Monday from Houston and enjoyed so much attending the Quilt Market and seeing all the new products, fabrics, etc, for the sewing industry. While I was there, I helped out in the Bosal Foam and Fiber booth demonstrating my Marlee Baby Bag made using their fusible fleece, poly therm insulated fleece and their craf=Tex sew in heavy interfacing and lastly their cotton woven interfacing!!!!!!!!!For my great niece Marlee, I designed the bag and made the first one for her. Then we worked up the pattern on the computer and had it printed and I sold and gave away copies at the Market. I took several I made which are listed and shown here in the blog. I also made one 1/2 way so people could see the interfacings sewn and or ironed in.
The people from Bosal are fabulous and were great to me-even printed the pattern-and took me out to dinnerand gave me an opportunity to see the Market from the Vendor's prospective. It was fun and enjoyable.
I love their product because of the way my bags look and feel using it and because it is made in the USA.
I met a lot of great people there and enjoyed talking with them.
I went to the Moda Fabric/United Notions dinner and met some lovely ladies from California who make mosaic quilts based on architecture they see all over the world. So fabulous to talk with them.
When I left the Hilton to get a cab to the airport, I chatted with Kate Spain, Moda's newest designer, and we shared the long cab ride to the airport. She designs fabric, paper products, a lot of things. She was so great to talk with and so nice. It was my honor to meet her. Her fabric line is called Verna by Moda. Check it out.
The people at the Hilton and at the George Brown Convention center were wonderful and I really felt at home.
It is great to get outside and travel and see other parts of the usa.

new drawstring bag with longer handle
I am so taken with the bags of the women of brasil and their florals and flowers that I saw one similar to this on flickr and just had to make one. I made it with shorter handles and a drawstring closurde. I went to the dentist and a lady wanted this bag with a longer handle so I made this one for her and I kept the original one with 2 shorter handles.

I bought a new sewing machine this summer++++++++Janome 11,000 Special Edition+++++and finally yesterday I got up my nerve to try to embroidery something. bags made with bosal interfacings
I am always looking for new and improved products for myself and for my online stores. Especially in interfacing, which make or break a bag. As bags are my passion, that is what I concentrate on the most.
I read about Bosal interfacing on someone's online site as used for a purse pattern. I contacted the company to get samples and have met up with the nicest guy ever. Drew Serbin. He sent me samples and I sewed all weekend making a bag, a make up bag and a cell phone case. Yesterday (Monday) I sent him p ictures and he posted them on his company's site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Truly an honor for me. Check it out

pincushion pins
I found out how to make the straight pins better so they will stand up instead of be perpendicular. I need to buy a heat gun for embossing I think. Anyway I do like these but they are not exactly what I wanted. The new pattern uses stamps instead of tracing and drawing. Of course, I need to get stamps and the gun and resin glue and hopefully I will be all set.
This is a work in process. h a ha

first flower
This is the first attempt and I did use felt. However, my felt is flimsy and I am wondering where people get the stiffer felt???????????
I got this at Hobby Lobby. I wonder if I could have starched it?
I attached this to my eyeglass case.

2nd flower
I have so many friends from Brazil and Portugal and their bags are awesome. They put flowers on everything and now I am trying to make flowers.
This is my second sttempt using fabric and this one is flat. Right after I made this I found another friends who makes them pufffy stuffed. Now, of course, I am wanting to make puffy stuffed ones too,
I have ordered 4 books, bought patterns, printed out pictures, and am all ready. h a ha
Then I found some already made on Etsy and of course I ordered several for patterns.
A friend wrote me and told me she uses a machine to make her flowers. What a surprise. Now, of course, I want the machine. SizzixBig Shot.

second birdie sling
I absolutely love Amy Butler's patterns and this one is my all time favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Birdie Sling. What a great purse to look at and to carry. It is so comfortable and the way she does the straps it rounds out and looks and stays great. I am carry my first one-the pink one- but I think this will be my fall one or maybe I will carry it now.

mod fabric from years ago
Well. when I first found this fabric, 10 years ago, I thought it was tacky. Now, I think it is awesome and wish the picture did it justice. It is bright pink and I feel the birth of another big baggy jobo coming. I laid it out on my kitchen table to take the picture and decided it would make an adorable tablecloth. I love the wild flowered fabrics and I am not alone. I have so many friends through Flickr who make the most fabulous bags with gorgeous fabrics and wonderful embellishments. They are teaching me.
So many are in Brazil and their creativity and talent is awesome.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pincushion pins
I found this tutorial for making stick pins with shrinky dinky and I wanted to try it, I made flowers and a butterfly and a couple ladybugs. I had to take the pincushion outside to get a good picture.
pincushion
Well, I finally made a pincushion I like. I found the pattern in a book I had on hand and didna't even know I had it. It is called Bags, Pillows, and Pincushions by Better Homes and Gardens

pincushion
I have been collecting pincushion pictures and patterns and finally decided yest erday was the day to try to make one for myself. I seem to be able to make big things easier than little...anyway, I think it turned out kinda cute first try and all. I will make another one soon. I found a pattern posted by a girl that is made using a babyfood jar and it is adorable. Hope mine will be too.
Candy from Germany
I have been saving this candy while I am dieting but it is really hard. My friend Elfriede went to Germany and Switzerland and Austria and brought me some things and of course she knows I love chocolate.
I already ate some of the candy she gave me for Easter, after Eastera because I gave up candy for Lent.

Bungalow Bag
I bought this pattern and of course I couldn't stand it I had to change something. It called for small store bought handles, which I changed to one longer handle so I could wear it on my shoulder. I think next time I would put 2 shorted fabric handles and interface the outside fabric because it is flimsy.
I love the Moda fab ric and using my Baby Lock is such a dream.

My Hobo pattern tweaked
This is a picture of the inside and the outside of a purse I designed last year and revisied recently. I call it my Hobo. I added a long strap so this could be worn across the body and gave it to mt niece Susan.
